Wake County Animal Shelter in Raleigh, NC

Wake County Animal Shelter is located in Raleigh, North Carolina, about 4 miles west of the city, and is one of 19 animal shelters and rescues serving Wake County. As the only open-admission shelter in the county, it takes in all stray pets in Wake County and works with community partners to treat and re-home thousands of homeless animals every year. Its mission is to make a difference for the animals and citizens of Wake County through adoption, education, enforcement, and community partnership, guided by the Five Freedoms framework for animal welfare based on the 1965 Brambell Report. The center's adoption floor is open daily from noon to 6 p.m., with administrative offices open Monday through Friday.

Adopting from Wake County Animal Shelter

Adoption process

Prospective adopters must first meet the pet in person (either at the adoption center or via a foster meet-and-greet) before starting the adoption process, and must show valid photo ID proving they are at least 18; all dogs and cats must be spayed/neutered before the adoption is finalized, and the pet can only go home once any stray hold is over.
