Help Save Pets

Adoption Process

Our adoption process is as follows: First, potential applicants can browse our listings of available dogs and cats and complete an adoption application. Next, our staff will review the application and connect you with the foster volunteer of the pet you are interested in. The foster volunteer will then arrange a "meet and greet" with you and any other household members. If both the foster and the adopter feel that the pet is a good fit, a home visit will be scheduled. Once the home visit is successfully completed, you will finalize the process by signing our adoption contract, paying the adoption fee, and bringing your new pet home.

Underdog Rescue MN in St. Louis Park, MN

Underdog Rescue and Placement was established in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie, who recognized a gap in support for dogs and cats often overlooked by other rescue organizations. These animals, referred to as "Underdogs," were in need of assistance. The organization's first rescues included two black kittens named Fenway and Wrigley, a pitbull puppy named Lucy, and a small Toy Poodle named Lily, who was suffering from a head injury. Fenway and Wrigley were not accepted by other rescue groups due to the common bias against black kittens, and at the time, rescue organizations were prohibited from saving any dogs classified as "Pit Bulls" from Minneapolis Animal Control. While attending law school, Shannon McKenzie successfully collaborated with Attorney Marshall Tannick to change the policy regarding pitbulls. Underdog Rescue now continues to effectively rescue and place pitbulls and other bully breeds through an ongoing partnership with Minneapolis Animal Control. Shannon's commitment to helping Underdogs also includes assisting survivors of puppy mills, who often face unique challenges. These dogs may need extra medical care, socialization, and training in basic skills, regardless of their age. Our volunteers are dedicated to welcoming these dogs into their homes, helping them learn what it means to be a pet and experience kindness from humans.
