Adoption Process

The International Shelter Dog Foundation (ISDF) aims to ensure that adoption costs do not discourage potential adopters. However, it is essential to recognize that the expenses associated with adopting an overseas dog can be significant. The total costs for flights, travel crates, pre-flight veterinary examinations, and export paperwork can range from $300 to $1,000. This variation depends on several factors, including the airline chosen, whether a flight volunteer is available, the size of the dog, the size of the travel crate, and if any boarding is required during transit. It is important to highlight these costs, as the lower end of the range may be comparable to typical adoption fees at local shelters, while the higher end could be a barrier for some individuals. Additionally, it is crucial to note that any remaining costs after your contribution must be covered by ISDF. Although some flights for our adoptable dogs may be partially or fully funded through our fundraising efforts, other expenses remain, such as additional paperwork, pet taxis, boarding at layover locations, cargo fees, and taxes when retrieving the dogs at the airport. Furthermore, there are costs associated with fostering, feeding, and veterinary care incurred prior to and after the flight, but before the adoption takes place. Most of our dogs do not have their full transport costs covered, despite our best efforts, which necessitates borrowing against future assistance for other dogs. Therefore, we suggest a minimum donation of $300, if possible, to help us continue supporting the maximum number of dogs in need. We want to emphasize that we do not wish for adoption costs to deter potential adopters; this guideline is provided to assist our funding efforts. Since ISDF operates without paid staff and has no overhead costs, 100% of all donations from adoption fees and fundraising directly benefits not only the dog you adopt but also others in need. The more we spend per dog, the fewer we can assist in finding homes. We are happy to discuss the estimated costs for your specific dog in more detail during the home visit. At this time, we would appreciate knowing what you feel you can contribute. This information will help us guide you in choosing from the many dogs available for adoption.
