Assisi Animal Foundation is a private, no-kill animal shelter located in rural Crystal Lake, Illinois, in McHenry County, and is the first no-kill, non-profit animal shelter established in the county, founded in 1983. Its mission, "Saving Animals and Serving People," centers on providing shelter, care, and re-homing for cats and dogs until they find loving, permanent homes. The shelter is about 35 miles west of Rockford, Illinois, and shares McHenry County with 15 other animal shelters and rescues. Assisi relies on community support through adoption, volunteering, and donations to fund veterinary care, food, medicine, and other supplies for the animals in its care.
