About this shelter

Howlin4Spirit Companion Animal Rescue in Rutherfordton, NC

H4S was established on January 2, 2004, in response to the lack of a shelter for adoptable pets in Rutherford County, North Carolina, where only a high-kill animal control facility existed. At that time, the adoption and return-to-owner rate was only 3%. Having volunteered for ten years at a shelter in Yancey County, North Carolina, where I helped establish a rescue effort and develop a modern shelter, I felt a sense of purpose during the summer months. However, during the winter, I struggled with feelings of aimlessness and boredom. This prompted me to take action and rescue as many dogs as possible in Rutherford County, where we resided during the winter. In 2007, we decided to sell our summer home, as the shelter in Yancey County had become self-sufficient and was achieving remarkable outcomes for animals in need. Since its inception in January 2004, H4S has rescued over 7,700 dogs and puppies. We transport as many animals as possible to no-kill rescues in New York and New Jersey and actively facilitate adoptions each month. Our organization maintains an average of 35 adoptable dogs and puppies, alongside 35 permanent sanctuary residents, primarily older beagles and hounds. This work has become my life's mission, and I am passionate about what I do. I sincerely wish that every county had access to a free spay/neuter clinic to reduce the need for rescue efforts.

Adopting from this shelter

Adoption process

All potential adopters must be at least 25 years old and have a fenced-in yard. They are required to complete an application that includes three non-related personal references and their current and past veterinary contact information. We will contact the veterinary office to discuss the pet's medical history, including heartworm prevention, vaccination history, any dental work or blood tests performed, and whether the pet has been spayed or neutered. Additionally, all applicants must submit photos of their fenced-in yard. A telephone conversation between the adopter and H4S is mandatory before any decision or approval is made to ensure that the dog is a suitable match for the adopter's family, environment, and daily routine. Adoption fees vary based on the age of the dog, typically ranging from $195 for adults and seniors to $295 or more for puppies. This fee includes all medical services such as spaying, microchipping, a Martindale collar and leash, a current health certificate, and transportation to the adopter’s home.
