Connecticut Humane Society in Quaker Hill, CT
The Connecticut Humane Society is the oldest and most comprehensive animal welfare organization in Connecticut, helping thousands of pets every year. Its Quaker Hill location, part of the Waterford campus at 169 Old Colchester Road, serves New London County, where 3 other animal shelters or rescues are also located, and sits roughly 35 miles northwest of Hartford. The organization envisions a Connecticut where every companion animal finds a permanent, compassionate home, communities are enriched by the human-animal bond, and animal cruelty no longer exists, offering adoption, veterinary care, pet food pantry, and pet rehoming services alongside its regular Monday–Friday 9:00 am–5:00 pm hours. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, CHS relies on donors and volunteers to rescue pets from suffering, cruelty, and neglect and guide them toward loving homes.

Adopting from Connecticut Humane Society
Adoption process
Adopting requires an in-person visit to a CHS location (Newington, Waterford, or Wilton) to complete an adoption questionnaire and meet with an adoption counselor, who helps match you with a suitable pet; if it's a good match, you meet the pet, then sign an adoption agreement and complete paperwork. Adopters must be at least 18, show valid photo ID with current address, and may need to bring family members, resident dogs, or landlord approval.
