About this shelter

Paws and Whiskers Cat Shelter, Inc. in Toledo, OH

Paws and Whiskers is a nonprofit organization based in Ohio, established in October 1996. Governed by a Board of Directors, the shelter is committed to providing a safe haven for unwanted cats. In addition to offering shelter, food, love, and veterinary care to homeless and orphaned felines in the area, we strive to find them safe and loving homes. As a no-kill facility and the only cat-exclusive shelter in the region, we have assisted over 6,700 cats and kittens in our first decade of operation. Our funding is entirely dependent on donations. Upon arrival at the shelter, each cat is weighed and assessed for any visible injuries. They receive treatment for intestinal parasites, are checked for fleas, and provided with flea treatment. Each cat is given food, water, and a warm, safe place to sleep. A veterinary examination is performed on every resident. Adult cats are tested for Feline Leukemia and Immunodeficiency Virus, while kittens are only tested for Feline Leukemia. We also check their ears, eyes, and teeth, and vaccinate them against calicivirus, panleukopenia, chlamydia, and feline rhinotracheitis. Any serious dental issues or significant health conditions are addressed surgically. Additionally, we aim to spay or neuter all animals older than four months before they leave the shelter. The average cost incurred for each resident during their stay exceeds $225. To support new pet owners, we provide 30 days of pet health insurance to help cover expenses in case a cat becomes ill after adoption. If a cat falls ill within the first ten days, which can occur due to the stress of relocation, we will cover the medical care at our veterinary facility during the insurance waiting period. We also offer a "cat-back" guarantee, ensuring that any cat adopted from us will never be homeless again, as we will accept them back at any time, for any reason.
