American Bear Association in Orr, MN
The American Bear Association is a nonprofit organization based in Orr, Minnesota, in St. Louis County, roughly 90 miles south of Duluth, and shares the county with 8 other animal shelters and rescues. The organization manages the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary, established on the former homestead of logger Vince Shute, who famously stopped shooting bears that broke into his cabins and instead pursued a peaceful coexistence with them. Its mission is to promote a better understanding of the black bear through education, observation, and experience, and the bears at the sanctuary are entirely free-roaming, coming and going at will through the surrounding clover meadows, cedar swamps, and pine forest rather than being fenced in. Visitors can observe bears up close, and the association offers memberships, volunteer opportunities, guided tours, and photography workshops to support its conservation and education work.
