The Green Ark is an animal shelter located in Portland, Maine, in Cumberland County, roughly 3 miles south of the city and among 10 other animal shelters and rescues in the county. Founded in February 2013 by Athena Spinn Carriere, it operates as an all-volunteer rescue that takes in dogs regardless of breed, age, or size, believing that traits which make a dog seem "unadoptable" often stem from fear and confusion in a shelter environment. The organization's ultimate goal is to build a fully self-sustainable animal sanctuary open to all animals in need, relying on volunteers, partnerships with overwhelmed shelters, and donor support. It also partners with organizations like K9s on The Front Line and Ruff Riders Pet Transport to help train rescued dogs as service animals and safely bring them to Maine.
