Adoption Process

Visit the shelter in person, as adoptions are first come, first served with no holds placed; staff will collect basic information to help match you with a pet, and you can typically take your new pet home the same day.

The Humane Society of Elkhart County operates with the mission "Saving Animals. Enriching Lives." out of its shelter in Elkhart, Indiana, roughly 20 miles west of South Bend. It is the only humane society in Elkhart County and also serves as the county's animal control agency, taking in stray and at-large animals in addition to investigating an average of 100 animal abuse or neglect complaints each month. The organization impacts nearly 1,000 animals every month, offering adoptable dogs, cats, and other animals, and operates the Suzanne George Animal Care Center for veterinary services by appointment. The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
