Adoption Process

The adoption process includes submitting an application, checking references, and conducting a home visit. The adoption fee is $200. We provide an adoption contract that outlines our requirements for the animal to be a family pet and stipulates that the animal must be returned to our rescue if the adopter is unable to keep the dog. We require that dogs be kept as family pets and live indoors.

Service Areas

We are based in Highland County, Virginia. We rescue dogs from shelters in Virginia and North Carolina and facilitate adoptions to suitable homes, provided that transportation can be done by ground rather than air.

Jeanne Lou and Dot Terry have been dedicated to rescuing dogs for several years. To enhance their efforts, they established a non-profit rescue organization to facilitate fundraising for their mission. Dot's focus is to provide a permanent home at Dot's Old Dogs Home for large-breed senior dogs whose owners have passed away or moved into nursing care. These dogs often struggle in shelters and face bleak adoption prospects. At the sanctuary, they receive a commitment to a forever home while also being promoted for adoption, as having a loving human companion is ideal for them. Jeanne Lou's mission centers on rescuing dogs that are chained, penned, or at risk of being sold at yard sales, often involving smaller breeds. This is reflected in the name Little Big Dog, as the organization rescues both small and large dogs. The dogs rescued by Jeanne Lou are placed in foster homes where they receive veterinary care, spaying or neutering, socialization, and the opportunity for adoption.
