Pikes Peak Parrot Rescue in Colorado Springs, CO

Our nation faces a significant challenge that many may not be aware of: the ongoing plight of unwanted parrots. This issue has persisted since the late 1970s, when parrot breeding became popular. At that time, many people were unprepared for the long-term commitment required to care for these birds, which can live for over 60 years. The portrayal of parrots in Hollywood films and television shows contributed to their popularity, leading to a surge in ownership. However, many new owners soon discovered that caring for parrots is demanding, often resulting in deteriorating health for the birds. As a consequence, numerous parrots were abandoned or euthanized. Throughout America, dedicated individuals are stepping up to provide care for these unwanted parrots, often in their own homes and at their own expense. Unlike cats and dogs, parrots are not native to the U.S. and require specialized care. Their long lifespan means they represent a commitment that many people do not adequately plan for. Unfortunately, despite the hundreds of thousands of abandoned parrots worldwide, rescue organizations and sanctuaries for these birds are extremely rare. In Colorado, there are over 270 licensed animal shelters, yet only three are authorized to care for companion birds. This discrepancy highlighted the urgent need for the establishment of Pikes Peak Parrot Rescue (3PR), which was founded in 2013. Since its inception, 3PR has successfully rehomed over 700 parrots. Our mission is to find loving, permanent homes for unwanted birds and to educate the public on how to provide a fulfilling life for their parrots. Many people underestimate the intelligence of parrots; despite their small brains, they possess a neuron count comparable to that of chimpanzees. They can learn to speak and associate words with meanings, exhibiting logic akin to that of a four-year-old child. While all parrots are charming as babies, they develop distinct personalities as they mature. Unfortunately, this often leads to their surrender, as many owners fail to educate themselves on proper care. Consequently, rescue birds are frequently labeled as "damaged," a stigma that overlooks the fact that many of these birds still have 20 to 60 years of life ahead of them. Meanwhile, breeders continue to produce new birds, perpetuating this ongoing crisis. 3PR emphasizes that no bird is truly "damaged." Parrots, much like humans, have preferences and the ability to form bonds. It is crucial for potential parrot owners to visit rescues and spend time with birds before making a lifelong commitment. Unlike dogs, parrots do not display obedience in the same way; when a parrot chooses you, it is an unparalleled experience. We strongly encourage individuals to consider adopting from a rescue rather than purchasing from a pet store or breeder, as many parrots are already waiting for a home. Pikes Peak Parrot Rescue relies on community support to continue our mission. As a PACFA-licensed nonprofit, we do not receive external funding and do not charge individuals for surrendering their birds. Our operation depends entirely on the generosity of our community to provide the enrichment and quality of life these remarkable birds deserve.
