Adoption Process
The adoption process requires a fully completed and comprehensive adoption application that includes references. If the application is successful, a home visit will be conducted. Additionally, a detailed adoption contract must be signed, outlining the specific requirements for the new adoptive parent. In the event that the adoption does not work out for any reason, the dog must be returned. Adoption fees vary depending on factors such as the dog's age and special circumstances. The same requirements apply to both adoptions and fostering. The process begins with a comprehensive application that contains a preface explaining the procedure, along with important details and obligations for the applicant. The application includes questions designed to determine whether the applicant is a suitable potential adopter or foster parent. Recently, a $20 application fee has been introduced, which is partially applicable to the adoption fee if the application is approved. This fee helps to filter out individuals who are not serious about adopting or fostering. Foster parents serve as the initial point of contact for prospective adopters, allowing them to ask specific questions about the dog and enabling the foster to make an initial assessment. The conversation between the foster and the potential adopter can continue for an extended period, at the discretion of the foster parent. If the adoption application receives preliminary approval from one of the two dedicated Adoption Coordinators and all references are positive, the final decision rests with the foster parent. The application is reviewed for completeness, accuracy, and honesty by one of the Application Coordinators. Personal and veterinary references are contacted directly for their insights, which are mandatory. If the application is tentatively approved, a qualified individual will schedule a home visit, using the Home Visit document as a guide. This individual is typically affiliated with another rescue organization or a local humane society. Upon successful completion of the home visit, the application will receive approval pending final consent from the foster parent. Generally, the entire family and any other pets should be present during this stage at the foster's home. The adoption and foster application can be accessed online at bostonterriertn.org as a web-based form. The application is structured to ensure accurate and truthful responses, requiring detailed information about the applicant's current and previous pets, veterinary records, adherence to veterinary practices, necessary medications, and reliable references. A quick call to the veterinarian's office can confirm or disqualify an applicant. The Boston Terrier Rescue of East Tennessee has two knowledgeable Application Coordinators who are adept at processing applications. The evaluation process for fostering mirrors that of adoption, with additional support provided to foster parents by the rescue.

Boston Terrier Rescue of East TN in Maryville, TN
The Boston Terrier Rescue of East Tennessee is an affiliate of the Boston Terrier Rescue Network and is recognized as a Chartered Rescue in the State of Tennessee. Our operations span the entire state and extend into Virginia, Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Georgia, and West Virginia, where we collaborate with other Boston Terrier rescues. We also provide support to rescues in Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. Our primary focus is on areas with the greatest need, particularly East Tennessee, Eastern Kentucky, Western North Carolina, and the metropolitan Atlanta area. We collaborate with all Boston Terrier rescues recognized by the Boston Terrier Club of America’s Rescue Board, maintaining personal relationships with members of these organizations through regular communication and shared resources via various online groups. Additionally, we forge partnerships with numerous breed and mixed breed rescue organizations, particularly in the Southeast and Midsouth, and are especially active in the Atlanta Metro and Chattanooga areas. We foster supportive relationships with organizations such as Best Friends, AnimalWorld, and Petfinder, as well as various municipal shelters in the Southeast. Our interactions with these shelters are often personal, enabling us to assist one another in finding homes for dogs in need. We actively post dogs for adoption, especially those located far from us, and have successfully placed many dogs through these efforts. As a result, many local humane societies and shelters now reach out to us when they have a Boston or Boston mix in need. As a small, focused rescue, we have regional coordinators, representatives, agents, and foster homes throughout Tennessee, western North Carolina, southwestern Virginia, and northern Georgia. Annually, we place approximately 120 to 140 dogs and serve as a sanctuary for those who are too old or ill to be adopted. Currently, we have around a dozen foster homes and nearly forty agents and representatives ready to assist dogs in need. We also maintain a significant network of volunteers across the eastern United States who are willing to help at a moment's notice, many of whom are affiliated with other Boston Terrier rescues with whom we partner. Our mission is to rescue Boston Terriers, their mixes, and any other dogs from difficult situations and find them loving, permanent homes after providing necessary veterinary care. For older, sick, or otherwise unadoptable dogs, we offer a sanctuary where they can live comfortably. The individuals managing our organization are experienced professionals, many of whom are retired and have had successful careers in various fields. We understand that effective rescue work requires careful cost management while delivering excellent care. To achieve this, we seek opportunities to reduce expenses while maintaining high standards, such as performing routine veterinary tasks ourselves when possible. Our focus on Boston Terriers allows us to address their specific needs and characteristics effectively. We also collaborate with rescues of similar breeds, such as bulldogs, boxers, French Bulldogs, and pugs, recognizing that their needs often align with those of Boston Terriers. As active members of several mixed breed organizations, we also strive to find homes for other breeds and mixed breed dogs, dedicating considerable effort to match dogs in need with appropriate rescues. In challenging situations where shelters or rescues face crises, we partner with like-minded organizations to organize funding, transport, and support. Our recent efforts in Leland, MS, exemplify this collaboration, where we helped mobilize community support through calls and online outreach to assist a struggling shelter. We care for dogs that may be too old, too sick, or exhibit behavioral issues that make them poor adoption candidates. For instance, Rodney Buster, a former "bait dog," has suffered significant injuries and is not a suitable candidate for adoption. These dogs, along with our elderly residents, contribute to our community by providing comfort to younger dogs and occasionally fostering puppies. Our commitment is to rescue any Boston Terrier or Boston mix, regardless of their health or age. We embrace those who are sick, elderly, or otherwise unadoptable, demonstrating our dedication to this remarkable breed of intelligent and affectionate dogs.
