Adoption Process

Lost and stray animals are held at Dekalb Animal Services for a five-business-day stray waiting period to allow their owners an opportunity to reclaim them. After this period, adoptable animals are kept as long as space permits. The adoption fees are as follows: - Female dog: $92.00 - Male dog: $87.00 - Female cat: $82.00 - Male cat: $62.00 All adopted animals receive complete vaccinations and are spayed or neutered. Dogs also undergo heartworm testing. Once an animal is adopted, it is transported to our veterinarians for vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and testing. Please note that there are no refunds once these services are provided. If any medical issues arise from positive test results, it is the responsibility of the new owner to address these issues, which would have been screened out during our adoption process. After all medical procedures are completed, the new owner can pick up the animal either from our facility or the veterinarian, typically the following day.

DeKalb Animal Services and Enforcement is part of the DeKalb County Police Department's Special Operations Division. We offer services to the public while also supporting local law enforcement agencies. Our responsibilities include impounding a significant number of animals involved in drug busts, warrant services, evictions, as well as managing stray animals, cases involving dangerous or potentially dangerous animals, cruelty complaints, and instances of abandonment. Many of the animals we handle are held for law enforcement purposes related to ongoing cases in local and state courts.
