Adoption Process

Before adopting a cat, prospective owners are required to complete an adoption contract and provide essential information, including their address, home and work telephone numbers, driver's license number, and a photo ID, which will be attached to the contract. Adopters must agree to keep the cat indoors. If the adopter is renting, proof that pets are permitted must be provided. The current adoption fee is $60.00, subject to change without notice. Save Our Strays operates an adoption facility called Cat Haven, which is accessible by appointment only. When scheduling an appointment, please specify which cat you would like to meet. In addition to the facility, we also utilize foster homes and space donated by local pet stores. To initiate the adoption process, please contact us via email at [email protected] or call 727-481-5091. For inquiries, you may also reach our intake coordinator at 727-481-5262.

Save Our Strays Inc in Safety Harbor, FL

We are an all-volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to caring for approximately 600 cats each year, recognized as a 501(c)(3) entity. Save Our Strays stands out in Pinellas County as the only all-volunteer organization committed to accepting every stray cat or kitten in need, provided there is space in a foster home, without regard to age, appearance, or health. However, we only accept cats that reside within Pinellas County due to our limited capacity to care for animals from other areas. The only reason we would deny a cat from within our county would be a lack of available space. Every animal that enters a Save Our Strays shelter home is cared for until it finds a permanent home. We do not practice euthanasia as a means of population control; it is performed only under the guidance of a veterinarian and solely in the best interest of the animal. Our cats do not live in cages; they are placed in loving foster homes where they receive care for the rest of their lives. We do not accept feral cats into our foster program, as we are not a sanctuary and lack the resources to provide long-term care for them. When space becomes available in a foster home, we admit friendly, non-feral cats. Individuals seeking our assistance are typically responsible for transporting the cat to the veterinarian for an initial examination or directly to the foster home, as we do not have volunteers available for pick-ups. Before adoption, each cat undergoes a comprehensive veterinary examination, which includes testing for feline leukemia and FIV (if old enough), spay/neuter surgery, and vaccinations for distemper and rabies (if applicable). All cats are also microchipped, and any necessary medical treatments, including surgery, are provided. Once a cat is deemed healthy, it is ready for adoption and listed on Petfinder. We also showcase adoptable cats at various PetSmart locations in Pinellas County on selected Saturdays throughout the year, ensuring that they are not left at the stores. Since our inception in January 1995, Save Our Strays has medically assisted and adopted out over 8,500 cats and kittens. This achievement is made possible by the dedicated volunteers who devote their time and love to these animals, as well as the generous contributions from donors that directly fund their medical care and treatment.
