Dorchester Paws in Summerville, SC

Dorchester Paws is a no-kill animal shelter located in Summerville, South Carolina, in Dorchester County, where one other animal shelter or rescue is also located. Founded in 1972 as the Frances R. Willis SPCA, it is the only open-admission shelter in Dorchester County, taking in all lost, abandoned, and abused animals and providing them with food, shelter, medical care, and the chance for a loving forever home. The shelter is a member of the No Kill South Carolina Coalition and has not euthanized animals for time, space, or money since 2017, achieving a 93% live release rate in 2021. It is open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12:00PM to 5:00PM, and it also offers foster, volunteer, and Trap-Neuter-Release community cat programs, serving towns throughout Dorchester County including Ridgeville, Oakbrook, St. George, Summerville, and Grover.

Adoption process

You can optionally fill out an online application, but you must visit the shelter in person with a valid photo ID to meet the animal and speak with an adoption counselor; dogs must leave on a leash and cats in a carrier.
