Adoption Process

Adoptable dogs and cats are available daily; prior to adoption animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, and applicants can call for more information or submit an Animal Adoption Application.

Sangamon County Animal Control in Springfield, IL

Sangamon County Animal Control operates as the Animal Control Division of the Sangamon County Department of Public Health, serving Springfield, Illinois and all of Sangamon County. The division enforces state, county, and city ordinances relating to dogs and cats, impounds animals in violation of those ordinances, investigates bite incidents, investigates inhumane treatment of animals, and looks into domestic livestock injury claims. Located about 2 miles west of Springfield, the shelter operates its Animal Control and Adoption Center out of a dedicated facility on Shale Street and relies on community volunteers to help care for animals and support adoptions. It's open Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, and three other animal shelters or rescues also serve Sangamon County.
