La Plata County Humane Society has been protecting pets in Durango, Colorado since 1971. As an open-admission shelter, it accepts every pet from La Plata County that comes through its doors, regardless of circumstances, and works to protect, return, and rehome vulnerable animals in the community. A team of about 50 staff members and more than 300 volunteers helps the organization assist over 6,000 pets a year, supported by a thrift store whose proceeds go directly to shelter animals. La Plata County is also home to 2 other animal shelters or rescues, and the shelter sits roughly 40 miles southwest of Farmington, New Mexico.
