Alaska Humane Society in Anchorage, AK

Alaska Humane Society is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit humane society based in Anchorage, Alaska, located about 5 miles north of the city within Anchorage Municipality, where 14 other animal shelters and rescues also operate. Founded in 1979 and established as a shelter in 1988, it operates a no-kill shelter and sanctuary devoted solely to cats, accepting them on the basis of need rather than adoptability. The shelter currently houses around 150 cats, all spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for feline leukemia, and micro-chipped, and places more than 100 cats and kittens into new homes each year. It is open for visitation Monday through Saturday 7:00PM-9:00PM on weekdays and by appointment on Saturday and Sunday from 3:00PM-6:00PM, and it is not an open-admissions facility, requiring intake cats and strays to be arranged by phone in advance.

Adoption process

Adopters pay a $130 adoption fee (cash, Visa, or MasterCard) for any cat or kitten, must agree not to declaw the cat, and must agree to return the cat to the shelter if the adoption doesn't work out; returns/exchanges are allowed within the first 30 days.
