Adoption Process

Applicants submit an Adoption Application, which is reviewed (allow 3-4 weeks); if a good match, a volunteer contacts you by phone, followed by a home visit and a meeting with all family members and resident animals, and then an Adoption Contract is completed. Adoption fees are $300 for adult dogs and $450 for puppies.

TikiHut Akita Rescue Association (TARA) is located in Hayward, California, in Alameda County, roughly 25 miles south of San Jose, and is one of 26 animal shelters and rescues serving Alameda County. Run entirely by volunteers, TARA is dedicated to rescuing, rehoming, and rehabilitating homeless Akitas throughout Northern California, taking in dogs surrendered by owners or pulled from shelters and placing them in foster homes until adoption. The organization is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit that receives no support from county agencies or humane societies, relying instead on public donations, and it also works to educate the public about the Akita breed to help reduce the number of dogs surrendered to local shelters. Beyond adoptions, TARA maintains courtesy listings for Akitas still in shelters or private homes awaiting placement.
