Mountain View Farm Animal Sanctuary in East Burke, VT
Mountain View Farm Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit animal shelter located in East Burke, Vermont, in Caledonia County, roughly 40 miles southwest of Barre, and shares the county with five other area shelters and rescues. Founded in mid-2003 by Dr. John Pastore, a Boston cardiologist and innkeeper, the sanctuary grew out of his 2001 rescue of a mother-and-daughter pair of miniature Sicilian donkeys and has since welcomed a range of farm animals, including Yorkshire pigs, Pygmy goats, Shetland sheep, Holstein steers, various horse breeds, donkeys, and barn cats. Its mission is to give farm animals, particularly those with difficult pasts, a safe and healthy future while educating the public on proper animal care. The sanctuary sits on the same property as the Inn at Mountain View Farm, and both inn guests and the general public are welcome to visit the animals.
