The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society has served the community since 1919, making it the largest animal shelter in eastern South Dakota. It takes in abandoned, abused, homeless, and unwanted dogs, cats, and other critters, caring for them until they find permanent homes, guided by its mission to be a safe haven and human voice for all animals in need. Located about 4 miles southwest of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in Minnehaha County, the shelter is one of five animal shelters and rescues serving that county. Beyond adoptions, it offers community programs such as a working cat program, a pet food bank, microchipping, and community cat/TNR services.

Adoption process
Applicants fill out a 1-page application with photo ID and proof of address, then visit in person to interact with the pet for at least 20 minutes (children and resident dogs may need supervised introductions), and finalize by signing adoption paperwork to take the pet home same-day.
