The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, located about 4 miles southwest of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has served the area since 1919 and is the largest animal shelter in eastern South Dakota. It takes in abandoned, abused, homeless, and unwanted animals, providing tender loving care until they find a permanent home, guided by its mission to be a safe haven and human voice for all animals in need. The shelter finds homes for dogs, cats, and small "critters," and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Adoption process

Applicants fill out a 1-page application with photo ID and proof of address, then meet and interact with the adoptable pet in person (at least 20 minutes, with required child and current-dog introductions for dogs), and finalize by signing paperwork and taking the pet home the same day.
