About this shelter

Fort Defiance Humane Society in Defiance, OH

Founded in 1966, the FDHS is overseen by an active Board of Directors. Each year, we assist approximately 1,800 stray, surrendered, and homeless animals, including cats and dogs, in Defiance and the surrounding counties of Northwest Ohio. Our organization operates from the Justin F. Coressel Animal Shelter, conveniently located at the intersection of State Route 15 and Trinity Road near Defiance. Our annual operating budget is around $125,000, primarily funded through private donations, fundraising events, sponsorships, memberships, and adoption fees. The FDHS employs a small team, including our dedicated Shelter Director, Sarah Kadow. Our volunteer Board of Directors consists of eight committed individuals who invest significant hours in fundraising to support the organization. The mission of FDHS is to uphold the highest standards of humane care and professional treatment for all injured, ill, stray, or unwanted animals. We aim to ensure their safety and comfort, alleviate their suffering, help them find homes that will provide lifetime commitment, discourage animal cruelty, educate the public, promote humane behavior toward animals, and foster a positive relationship with the community. We require that every adopted animal be spayed or neutered, and we are committed to ensuring that our animals are healthy. Adoption fees for our dogs and cats include spay or neuter surgery, testing for heartworm or feline leukemia, general health checks, and appropriate vaccinations or treatments. We are now open seven days a week! Visit us any day from noon to 5:00 PM to meet our animals, who are always excited to see you. Additionally, you can find us on PetFinder.com.
