North Fork Animal Welfare League / Southold Animal Shelter is a no-kill dog and cat rescue shelter located in Southold, New York, in Suffolk County, where 37 other animal shelters and rescues are also based, and it sits roughly 30 miles northwest of New Haven, CT. Situated in Peconic within Southold Town, this shelter cares for homeless, lost, and death-row dogs, cats, and other animals, and was the first municipal shelter on Long Island to spay and neuter every animal prior to adoption, institute professional temperament testing, and offer a food pantry program for pets of needy residents. It has passed every professional inspection with 100% satisfaction for the last two decades and maintains one of the highest adoption rates and lowest euthanasia rates among municipal shelters in the country. The League also operates a Pets For Vets program pairing shelter animals with approved veterans at reduced adoption fees.
