Founded in 2003 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity, it works to connect pet owners, potential adopters, community cat caregivers, and rescue groups with the information and resources needed to care for New York City's animals. It serves as a hub for area shelters and rescues that take in dogs, cats, and in some cases other animals like rabbits, exotics, and birds, many of which pull animals from the city's Animal Care Centers, and each partner organization runs its own active adoption program to find these animals permanent homes. Through its "Need Help?" and "Want to Help?" initiatives, the organization also promotes spay/neuter awareness, emergency pet preparedness, and other resources supporting animal welfare throughout New York City.
