Animal Welfare Adoption Network (A.W.A.N.) is an animal shelter based in West Hurley, New York, in Ulster County, about 50 miles north of Albany, with 11 other animal shelters and rescues also located in Ulster County. A.W.A.N. is a small, grassroots, 501(c)(3) rescue group with a 20-year history, built as a network of concerned people who provide care for animals in need and place homeless pets into loving homes. The heart of its mission is fostering cats in network homes until adoptions can be arranged, with most of its budget going toward spay/neuter, rehabilitation of abused animals, and support for special-needs and elderly or infirm cats. The organization is led by Director Helen Mendoza and also works to promote affordable spay/neuter resources and provide advice to help people avoid surrendering or euthanizing their animals.
