We are an open-admission animal shelter dedicated to accepting every animal in need that we are legally able to accommodate. As an open-admission facility, we often take in animals that may not immediately qualify for adoption. Our foster parents work diligently with these animals to rehabilitate them and prepare them for adoption into loving homes. There is no time limit on how long an animal can stay in our adoption program. As long as we have the capacity and the animal can maintain good physical and emotional health in our shelter or foster care, it will remain with us. Each animal, regardless of the duration of its stay, is guaranteed a clean, safe, and comfortable environment, nutritious food and fresh water, medical supervision, necessary care and supplies, and regular interaction with volunteers for grooming, exercise, and socialization. We prioritize moving young puppies, kittens, and other special-needs animals into foster care until they are ready for adoption. Additionally, we collaborate with breed-specific organizations to find homes for certain animals, which helps us maintain space in our shelter. Our goal is to avoid euthanizing healthy animals or those that can be rehabilitated or placed in lifelong homes. We successfully find new homes for the majority of our pets and appreciate the community's support as we work towards creating a low-kill environment. Our aim is to foster a low-kill community where all adoptable animals can find forever homes, and we are taking several steps to achieve this: - Promoting spaying and neutering for all companion animals. - Increasing the number of shelter animals adopted through our programs. - Encouraging responsible pet ownership through public awareness campaigns, humane education initiatives, and efforts to eliminate puppy mills and backyard breeders. - Supporting pet owners with training classes, counseling, and referrals to additional resources. The Humane Society of Kent County Maryland, Inc. is a private, charitable 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We operate independently and are not affiliated with any other animal-welfare organizations, either locally or nationally. Our operations rely solely on community support and public donations.
