The Animal Refuge League is a nonprofit animal shelter located in Westbrook, Maine, roughly 5 miles east of Portland, in Cumberland County, where 10 other animal shelters and rescues also operate. Known as the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARLGP), it serves more than 4,000 homeless and displaced animals annually, offering adoption of dogs, cats, and bunnies, critters, and birds, along with a Community Clinic at Baxter, behavior and training programs, and humane education initiatives for the community. The organization also runs a foster program, spay/neuter and financial assistance resources, and hosts a variety of community fundraising events to support its life-saving mission.
