Humane Society of North Iowa in Mason City, IA
The Humane Society of North Iowa has been serving Mason City and the surrounding area since 1959, when it was founded by local resident Alice Anne Blackmore, who began by finding homes for animals on her own farm. The organization moved into its current state-of-the-art facility in 2009, and adoption records dating back to the mid-1980s show it has found homes for nearly 13,000 animals, including cats, kittens, and dogs. It operates as a no-kill shelter, meaning animals are not euthanized due to space constraints or length of stay, and it relies on individual donations to cover food, shelter, and veterinary care. Located in Mason City in Cerro Gordo County, roughly 60 miles southeast of Waterloo, it is one of three animal shelters or rescues serving Cerro Gordo County.
