Pet Refuge, Inc. is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3), no-kill animal shelter in Mishawaka, Indiana, located in St. Joseph County, about 3 miles northwest of South Bend. Established in April 1978, it relies on a dedicated group of volunteers and foster homes to care for cats and dogs until they find forever homes, spaying or neutering, vaccinating, and microchipping every animal before adoption, with cats also tested for leukemia and FIV and dogs tested for heartworm. The shelter also runs a public food program for local pet owners in financial need and promotes responsible pet ownership and spay/neuter education throughout the community. St. Joseph County is home to 7 other animal shelters and rescues in addition to Pet Refuge.
