American Greyhound in Dyer, IN
American Greyhound, located in Dyer, Indiana in Lake County, is dedicated to helping retired racing greyhounds, Spanish galgos, lurchers, and other sighthounds in need, and is one of 16 animal shelters and rescues serving Lake County, about 25 miles north of Chicago, IL. The organization is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that relies entirely on volunteers, foster homes, donations, and fundraising to operate, with volunteers welcoming dogs into their homes, providing veterinary care, and often teaching them what it means to live as a pet for the first time. Its mission extends internationally through the "From Spain to Safety" program, which works to rescue Galgos Españoles from difficult conditions abroad and bring them to the U.S. for adoption. American Greyhound also hosts community events like its annual Winning Hearts Benefit Gala to support its work finding sighthounds loving, forever homes.
