Gunnison Valley Animal Welfare League (GVAWL) operates the Sue MacAllister Animal Shelter and Adoption Center in Gunnison, Colorado, about 120 miles east of Colorado Springs. Its mission is to promote the welfare of animals by caring for homeless pets and placing them in permanent homes, assisting the community with spay/neuter costs, and preventing neglect and cruelty through public education on humane treatment. The shelter cares for both dogs and cats, including seniors and bonded pairs, and works to match them with new family members rather than treating them as simply homeless animals. It is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:00–7:00 PM and Saturdays from 10:00 AM–2:00 PM, and is supported by local organizations including the City of Gunnison, Gunnison County, and the Community Foundation of Gunnison Valley.
