The Town of Saugerties Animal Shelter, located at 1767 Route 212 in Saugerties, New York, behind the town's Transfer Station, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and sits roughly 45 miles north of Albany. The shelter cares for dogs, cats, rabbits, and other small animals, working with local residents through appointment-based adoptions and an approved application process. It is not an open-intake shelter and does not euthanize animals simply to make space, reserving that decision only for cases of serious illness or dangerous behavior. The current facility, a converted equipment garage roughly 40 years old, is being replaced through the efforts of the Saugerties Animal Welfare Fund, a 501(c)(3) established in 2018 to raise resources for a new shelter building that meets updated New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets standards.
