United Yorkie Rescue in The Villages, FL

United Yorkie Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated exclusively to rescuing Yorkshire Terriers and Yorkie mixes, based in The Villages, Florida, in Sumter County, where one other animal shelter or rescue also operates; the organization sits roughly 45 miles southeast of Orlando. UYR fully vets every foster dog, updating vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and addressing dental and other medical needs, and it takes on serious conditions such as liver shunt, orthopedic injuries, and tumor surgery that many rescues cannot handle. To date the group has rescued 4,474 Yorkies and Yorkie mixes, spending over $3.5 million on vetting costs. Adopters go through a thorough application process that includes personal and vet reference checks and a home visit, and dogs too medically fragile or elderly to be adopted are cared for for life through the group's "Forever Ours" program.
