About this shelter

ARF Humane Society of Jackson County, NC (Dog Adoption & Fostering Service) in Sylva, NC

ARF Humane Society of Jackson County, NC is a dog rescue based in Sylva, North Carolina, about 60 miles northwest of Knoxville, TN. Founded in 1978 by a group of friends determined to help local animals, it operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to rescuing, fostering, rehoming, and providing spay/neuter services for dogs in Jackson County. Dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds are placed in foster homes, with ARF supplying food, crates, toys, and medical care while foster families provide daily care until each dog finds a permanent home. In partnership with Catman2, ARF also runs a low-cost spay/neuter program serving Jackson, Macon, and Swain counties, and it can be reached Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Adopting from this shelter

Adoption process

Applicants complete an online adoption application so the foster (who houses the dog) can contact them, check references and vet history, and decide if it's a good match; adopters must be 18+, have household/landlord approval, keep pets mainly indoors, and all pets must be spayed/neutered before adoption, after which the dog is picked up from the foster and records are mailed to the adopter.

Service area: Jackson County, NC (spay/neuter services also serve Macon and Swain counties)
