About this shelter
Paws animal welfare society animal rescue in Fort Kent, ME
Paws Animal Welfare Society Animal Rescue (PAWS) is a nonprofit rescue organization based in Fort Kent, Maine, about 170 miles south of Bangor. PAWS rescues homeless cats throughout the St. John Valley in Aroostook County, sheltering them until suitable homes are found, and providing spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and medical care ranging from basic treatment to more extensive procedures like dentistry and surgery for cats that need it. Many of the cats are abandoned former house cats, while others born outdoors require socialization before they can be placed; only cats that are seriously ill or injured with little hope of recovery are euthanized, which rarely happens. The organization opened a new shelter in 2015 that was later expanded in 2018 to include an isolation room, climbing shelves, cat trees, and an enclosed outdoor "catio," and its core mission centers on reducing the population of unwanted cats and kittens through spay/neuter efforts and community assistance programs.
