Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center is a no-kill rescue organization in Huntington, New York, dedicated to rescuing dogs and cats from kill shelters and placing them into loving homes. Founded as Suffolk County's first Humane Society, it is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has grown into one of the few organizations in the country operating as both a rescue and a sanctuary, running community programs like an Animal Soup Kitchen, a reading program, and TNR efforts for feral cats. It's located about 20 miles northwest of Stamford, CT, and welcomes visitors Monday through Friday from 1:00–7:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00–5:00 PM.

Adopting from this shelter

Adoption process

Visitors fill out a pre-interview form, meet pets with an adoption counselor, and place a chosen animal on a 24-hour hold; during this time the shelter checks two personal references, does a veterinarian check, checks landlord pet policies if applicable, and requires a meeting with existing pets, after which adopters return the next day to take the pet home. Adopters must be at least 21 years old, and no same-day adoptions are allowed.
