The Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter is located in Hempstead, New York, about 15 miles northwest of Yonkers, and is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The shelter houses unclaimed stray dogs and owner surrenders from the Town of North Hempstead, taking in dogs of all shapes, sizes, and ages. It works in partnership with The Shelter Connection, an all-volunteer nonprofit founded in 1999 whose trained adoption advisers and dog handlers support shelter improvements, a Mend-a-Paw program, and humane education, with the goal of finding each dog the home and family they deserve. The shelter also participates in a Trap, Spay/Neuter, Release program for feral cats and kittens in the Town of North Hempstead.

Adoptions are by appointment only, arranged by calling the shelter during business hours; the adoption fee is $57 (check or credit card), and dogs are spayed/neutered, vet-checked, heartworm tested, micro-chipped, and vaccinated before adoption.
