South LA Animal Shelter, located at 1850 W. 60th St. in the Chesterfield Square area of Los Angeles, California, is one of six shelters operated by LA Animal Services, the city department that promotes and protects the health, safety and welfare of animals and people. The shelter is open Tuesday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and sits about 6 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. Through LA Animal Services, it offers adoption and fostering of dogs, cats, rabbits and other small pets, along with spay and neuter services, microchipping, vaccinations, a pet food pantry, and lost-and-found pet search assistance. The shelter also supports the citywide cat program and connects the community with wildlife resources and emergency pet safety information.

Adoption process

Visit any of the six LA Animal Services Centers (open Tue-Fri 8am-5pm, Sat-Sun 11am-5pm, no appointment needed) and browse available pets; a government-issued photo ID is required, adoption fees vary by animal type, and if multiple people want the same animal a silent auction bidding process is used. Adopted dogs, cats, and rabbits go home already spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.
