Adoption Process
All steps of our adoption process must be completed before you will be considered for any dog or scheduled for visits. However, you are welcome to attend our upcoming events to meet Italian Greyhounds and Whippets during the application process. Step 1: Application Submission. We require an adoption application to proceed. Please submit your application via email, fax, or postal mail to our P.O. Box. Applications can be downloaded from the Fostering and Adoption section of our website. Applications sent by email or fax will be prioritized for review, while the P.O. Box is checked weekly. Step 2: Reference Checks. We will contact both personal references and your veterinarian to ask questions about your background. If you are uncomfortable with this or any other part of our adoption process, we suggest considering your local shelter for adoption. Step 3: Phone Interview. A representative from TIGR will contact you to discuss your application and address any concerns. We aim to match the most suitable dog with the perfect forever home. Step 4: Home Visit. We will arrange a home visit at a mutually convenient time for our volunteer representative and you. During this visit, we will inspect the fencing and the overall living environment for the dog. The volunteer closest to your area will conduct the visit, which may not necessarily be the one with the dog you are interested in. All individuals involved in the adoption must be present at the time of the visit. Step 5: Meeting the Dogs. Once approved, you can start meeting the dogs. We will connect you with the foster parents, who will provide insights into daily life with the specific dog and whether it fits your lifestyle. Meetings will be scheduled directly between you and the foster parents. If the first visit goes well, the second visit can lead to adoption. We understand that the process can be lengthy, but it is effective. Many Italian Greyhounds and Whippets are placed in loving forever homes. The average lifespan for these breeds is 12 to 16 years, with some living longer, making this a long-term commitment. Please remember that falling in love with a specific dog does not necessarily mean it is the right fit for you or your family. Our volunteers are here to assist and educate you on each individual dog. Out of State Adoption Information: While we occasionally consider out-of-state adoptions, we prioritize local and neighboring state adoptions because they are generally easier for both the adopter and the dog. We do not adopt outside of the United States. As part of our adoption process, all potential adopters must undergo a phone and home interview. Home visits may be challenging for out-of-state applicants, but they are a requirement for our process. We involve the foster home in the decision-making process, as they know the dog best, and some volunteers may not be comfortable sending their dogs out of state. TIGR does not ship, transport, or fly any of our foster dogs. Therefore, potential adopters are required to come to Texas to meet the dog on two occasions to determine if it is a good match and to complete the adoption process. Our goal is to ensure that each dog is matched with an appropriate forever home, which is why every step of our adoption process is critical. While returns to TIGR can occasionally occur, any adopted dog must be returned directly to us in Texas.
