Adoption Process

Our Adoption Process To begin the adoption process, you must first submit an online adoption application. Please complete the application at www.tarashouse.net/adoptionapplication.html, ensuring that all required information is filled out, including details about your veterinarian and landlord. Once you have answered all questions, click submit to send your application to our Adoption Committee. After you submit your application, a representative from Tara's House will conduct an initial telephone interview within 3 to 5 days if the Adoption Committee decides to move forward with your application. If your application was submitted in person during a monthly adoption event, we will conduct the initial interview on the spot. If we proceed with your application after the initial review, a Tara's House representative will contact your references, particularly your veterinarian and landlord, to conduct a reference check. Provided that all references provide positive feedback and all other requirements are met, a member of our Adoption Committee will reach out to arrange a brief home visit. During this visit, we will ask you to demonstrate a typical day in the life of your potential adopted dog and assess the environment and conditions available for the dog. Following the home visit, our Adoption Committee will meet—usually virtually—to discuss your application and the insights gained throughout the process. Based on this collaborative review, the committee will make a final decision regarding your application and inform you promptly. If you are approved to adopt a Tara's House dog, you will need to sign and submit our legally binding adoption contract along with an adoption fee ranging from $270 to $375, depending on the dog. This fee should be paid by check made out to Tara's House. You will also be required to pick up your new dog from the designated foster home within three days of receiving approval, unless we have communicated alternative arrangements for the pickup.

Tara's House is a private, nonprofit organization recognized as a 501(c)(3) based in Columbia and Silver Spring, Maryland. Our mission is to rescue pets in need and provide them with care and compassion, ultimately placing them in permanent, loving homes through a competitive adoption process. As a high-placement organization, we primarily rescue pets from high-kill shelters that lack funding for their adoption programs. We do not receive any government funding and rely entirely on private donations, adoption fees, and the efforts of our volunteers to operate.
