Adoption Process

All prospective adopters must complete an online application. After reviewing the application, we will reach out to the applicant to conduct a phone interview, followed by a Zoom call to meet with the foster parent and discuss the cat in detail to assess compatibility. Once this process is complete, the potential adopter will have the opportunity to meet the cat in person. If approved, they can take the cat home, sign an adoption agreement, and pay a $150 adoption fee.

Service Areas

GMS rescues cats from San Francisco, the greater San Francisco Bay Area, the California Central Valley, and a limited number of international locations each year.

Give Me Shelter Cat Rescue in San Francisco, CA

Give Me Shelter Cat Rescue, founded in 2003 by Lana Bajsel, is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the overpopulation of abandoned and unwanted adult and senior cats in the San Francisco community. Our small team of committed volunteers works diligently to save as many feline lives as possible. We provide essential behavioral and medical care, along with unconditional love and a safe environment, while we search for permanent homes for our cats. Unfortunately, older cats face significant challenges when placed in local shelters. In San Francisco, many adult cats are at risk of euthanasia due to factors such as age, treatable medical conditions, or the stress of shelter life. We believe that adult and senior cats, often possessing calm and gentle personalities, can make excellent family pets. Our mission is to rescue these cats and secure loving, permanent homes for them through fostering and proactive adoption initiatives.
