Adoption Process
We are dedicated to helping you find the perfect puppy, dog, cat, kitten, horse, or other animal that meets your needs. Our experienced staff is well-acquainted with each of our rescue animals and is ready to answer any questions you may have. Whether you are searching for a cat-friendly dog, a relaxed kitten, or a horse with a vibrant personality, we are here to assist you. To begin the adoption process, we invite you to visit our refuge. You will be pleasantly surprised by the environment, which allows for stress-free interactions with the animals, in contrast to a traditional kennel setting. Once you have identified your ideal companion, we will guide you through the application process. After a reference check and approval of your application, as well as payment of the adoption fee, you will be able to take your new pet home. Adoption fees are as follows: - Dogs six months and older: $150, which includes heartworm preventative, flea preventative, preventative worming, and vaccinations. - Puppies under six months: $175, which includes preventative worming and a spay/neuter procedure, if age appropriate, or a certificate for the procedure. - Cats six months and older: $100, which includes a Felv/Fiv snap test, vaccinations, and spay/neuter. - Kittens under six months: $125, which includes a Felv/Fiv snap test, vaccinations, and a spay/neuter procedure, if age appropriate, or a certificate for the procedure. - Horse adoption fees vary by individual animal, but each horse is always up to date on all vaccinations and deworming medications.
Service Areas
Alaqua Animal Refuge is an independent, non-profit organization based on Florida's Emerald Coast. The organization is dedicated to promoting the welfare and humane treatment of animals by offering shelter, adoption services, and programs to prevent pet overpopulation. Situated on a beautiful 10-acre farm in Freeport, Florida, the refuge provides a safe haven for once-homeless, lost, and abused animals. These animals enjoy the freedom to run and play in sunlit pastures, swim in clean ponds, relax on screened porches, and graze in lush fields. People from across Northwest Florida and nearby states and cities visit the refuge to adopt pets.
Alaqua Animal Refuge in Freeport, FL
Alaqua Animal Refuge was established in 2007 by Laurie Hood, a resident of Walton County, Florida, in response to the alarming number of animals being euthanized due to the absence of a no-kill shelter and adoption organization in the region. Since its inception, the refuge has successfully placed over 5,000 animals into loving homes. The shelter currently facilitates the adoption of up to 100 animals each month and provides a safe haven for more than 250 animals at any given time. In addition to its adoption efforts, Alaqua Animal Refuge is committed to serving the community through various programs. Since 2008, the organization has implemented the S.N.A.P. Program, which offers free or low-cost spay and neuter services to more than 2,000 animals each year. As we continue to expand and enhance our facility and operations, we remain dedicated to our core mission: to provide neglected, lost, and abandoned animals with a new opportunity for life.
