Save Our Cats and Kittens, Inc. in Fort Walton Beach, FL
Save Our Cats and Kittens, Inc. (SOCKS) is a cat rescue based in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, located in Okaloosa County, where six other animal shelters and rescues also operate; the city sits roughly 80 miles west of Mobile, Alabama. Founded in 1993 by Sara DeMonbrun in her own home, SOCKS moved to its current Carmel Drive location in 2004 and operates as a limited-intake, free-roaming shelter focused on adoption, medical care, humane population management, and community education. It serves Okaloosa, Walton, and Santa Rosa counties by sheltering homeless cats and kittens, sterilizing every cat it adopts out, supporting community cat colony management, pulling animals from overcrowded shelters to prevent euthanasia, and providing food assistance to low-income owners. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, it relies solely on donations, estate bequests, sponsors, fundraisers, its thrift store, and grants rather than government contracts.
