Adoption Process

To meet our rescued cats and kittens, we request that you first complete an adoption application. After you submit your application, a volunteer will reach out to you. Since all of our cats are housed in foster homes, some can be viewed at these homes or at an upcoming Adoption Fair. We appreciate your understanding that we are an all-volunteer organization, and many of us have full-time jobs outside of our volunteer commitments. As a result, it may take a few days for someone to respond to your email, though we strive to reply as quickly as possible. Please note that our cats and kittens are available for adoption, not for sale. The adoption fee for kittens is $125, or $200 for two, which helps cover some of our food and veterinary expenses. All cats and kittens are vaccinated according to their age, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas, tested for feline leukemia (FELV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), and spayed or neutered prior to adoption. We will ask you questions about your home and are happy to answer any inquiries you may have. Adopting a cat is a long-term commitment, as the average lifespan of a cat is 15 to 20 years. Most of our cats are in foster homes with other cats, as they can feel lonely and bored without the company of their own species. We aim to match cats that enjoy the company of others with homes where they will have feline companionship. However, we also have many cats that would thrive as the only cat in your household. Regardless of how an animal comes to us, we ensure they receive food, shelter, and medical care. The animals live in foster homes rather than cages. We typically know the personalities of the cats and kittens we rescue, allowing us to recommend the best match for you and any existing feline companions you may have.

13th St. NAC Cat Rescue is a dedicated group of volunteers, led by Joanne, serving the Northside area of San Jose since 2005. Our mission is to improve the lives of both feral and social cats while managing their population through a method known as Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). This internationally recognized program involves trapping cats, providing vaccinations, and spaying or neutering them before returning them to their original habitats for ongoing care. Kittens and socializable cats are taken into foster care and made available for adoption. We do not operate from a fixed shelter location on 13th Street; instead, all of our animals reside in foster homes. We participate in various pet fairs and neighborhood events throughout the month, which can be found on our Adoption Fairs/Events page. There are several ways to support our organization and the community. You can volunteer to help trap cats and transport them to veterinary appointments for vaccinations and neutering, assist with fundraising efforts, foster cats temporarily, or make a donation to our cause. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization under the 13th Street NAC (Northside Action Committee), your donations are tax-deductible.
