Adoption Process
Individuals interested in adopting an animal are encouraged to visit the Care & Adoption Center. Some animals may be available for immediate adoption, while others may need to be held for a few days before they can be released. The animals available for adoption can be viewed during our regular business hours. All citizens, regardless of their city of residence, are welcome to adopt spayed or neutered dogs and cats from the Animal Care & Adoption Center. All adoptable dogs and cats will be spayed or neutered before being placed with their new owners. Every dog and cat adopted from our Care & Adoption Center receives vaccinations, including a rabies vaccination. Dogs are tested for heartworm, and cats are tested for FIV and Feline Leukemia. We recommend that all adopters have their new pet examined by a licensed veterinarian within ten days of adoption. Ongoing health care is crucial for your pet's well-being, and it is essential for adopters to find a veterinarian for continued care. The Department of Health Professions website can assist in locating a licensed veterinarian. The Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center takes the adoption process seriously and aims to facilitate a smooth transition for both adopters and their new pets. If you are considering adoption, we encourage you to ask our staff any questions to ensure you make the best decision for your family, as pet ownership is a lifelong commitment. Residents of Virginia Beach are required to purchase a Virginia Beach City License at the time of adoption. To adopt, interested individuals must complete a species-specific adoption questionnaire/application. Additionally, all dogs and cats currently owned by the potential adopter must be up to date on rabies vaccinations and City licenses, if applicable to their city of residence, at the time of adoption from the VBACAC. Individuals residing in rental properties must provide proof that the adopted animal is allowed in their residence. Those with a prior conviction for animal cruelty, failure to provide adequate care, or offenses related to domestic violence will not be permitted to adopt from the VBACAC.
