Adoption Process

The adoption process for potential adopters begins with the submission of an adoption application, followed by an interview, reference checks, and a home visit. Adoption applications can be submitted in advance for pre-approval and will be maintained on file. Before completing your application, please take into account the following considerations: - Your lifestyle (house, apartment, single, busy schedule, etc.) - Your preference for a male or female dog or cat - The desired personality and energy level of the pet (playfulness, calmness, dominance, neediness, etc.) - The appropriate age of the pet for your family - The age of any children in your household, as our pets are generally not suitable for homes with children under five years old. The adoption process includes the following steps: 1. Submit your application. Please allow one week for your application to be reviewed. 2. Applications may be submitted for pre-approval and will be kept on file for future reference. 3. An initial interview will be conducted via phone or email within one week of receiving your application. 4. We will check your references; if approved, we will schedule a home visit, which is the final step in the approval process. All family members must be present during this visit. 5. After the home inspection and approval, we will process an Adoption Contract, which includes a two-week trial period. At this time, the adoption fee will be collected, and the trial period will commence. This trial period provides you the opportunity to determine if the pet is a suitable match for you and your family. 6. During the two-week trial, if you find that the pet is not a good match, you may return the pet to Paws for Seniors, and the adoption fee will be refunded. 7. Adoption fees are set at $150 for senior dogs and $120 for senior cats. Successful applicants must: - Provide a loving, humane, and safe environment for the Paws for Seniors pet, ensuring the dog is kept as an indoor pet for its lifetime. - Provide necessary veterinary care and medications, including regular vaccinations, heartworm testing, and preventative care year-round, while complying with all local licensing laws. - Maintain a safe, fenced-in yard for the Paws for Seniors dog when outdoors, and ensure supervision by you or a family member. - Use a leash for the Paws for Seniors dog when outside a fenced area and prevent the dog from roaming freely at any time. - Consider any lifestyle changes that might affect both your life and your pet's well-being, such as potential health issues or future circumstances that could impact your ability to care for the pet. - Be prepared to return the Paws for Seniors pet at any time if you are unable to keep it for any reason or if lifestyle changes prevent you from meeting the aforementioned conditions.

Paws For Seniors in Toms Brook, VA

Paws for Seniors is a volunteer-driven rescue organization based in Fauquier County, Virginia. Our mission is to care for and find homes for senior dogs and cats aged seven years and older, ensuring they can spend their golden years in a loving and dignified environment through rescue, fostering, adoption, and hospice care. The issue we address is the unfortunate reality that many senior dogs and cats are surrendered by their families, often becoming homeless and ending up in animal shelters. At Paws for Seniors, we believe that these senior pets deserve a safe and nurturing environment to enjoy their later years. Our organization was founded to help these animals find loving homes where they can live out their remaining days with care and respect. We see ourselves not as competitors to other rescue groups and shelters but as collaborators. Our shared goal is to assist animals in distress, provide them with the care they need, and help them find permanent homes. We recognize that pet companionship can significantly enhance the well-being of our aging population. Therefore, we aim to match senior dogs and cats with senior citizens, taking into account the needs of both parties. Additionally, we will partner with other rescues and shelters to promote and cross-post senior pets in their care, assisting them in securing permanent homes. We are committed to establishing a network of foster homes, which may include senior citizens, to create a safe and loving environment for pets awaiting adoption. This arrangement benefits seniors who wish to care for a pet but may face financial constraints. Paws for Seniors will provide food, veterinary care, and medications while the foster family offers love and daily support, with the potential for some fosters to become permanent caregivers. We also plan to implement programs that support senior citizens in maintaining the companionship of their existing pets. Furthermore, we are dedicated to raising awareness and educating the public on humane animal welfare issues.
