Northern Virginia Sheltie Rescue is a rescue organization based in Strasburg, Virginia, located in Shenandoah County, roughly 60 miles northeast of Hagerstown, Maryland, and one of four such shelters/rescues serving Shenandoah County. Founded in 1999, NVSR has rescued, rehabilitated, and placed almost 1,500 Shelties and Sheltie look-alikes into new homes, with most dogs relinquished by owners unable to keep them and others coming from shelters. The organization has no paid staff and no physical shelter facility; instead, all dogs are cared for by a network of nearly 100 volunteer fosters spanning Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, and Washington, DC. As a member of the National Sheltie Rescue Association, NVSR emphasizes thoughtful, lifelong placements over speed and stays connected with adopters for the life of each dog.
