Adoption Process
Most of our pets are housed in foster homes and are available for adoption only on Saturdays from 1 to 4 PM at Petco in Jonesboro. The adoption fee is $50.00. NAFA facilitates long-distance adoptions; interested individuals must be willing to travel to Jonesboro to meet the dog they are considering and to have a conversation with our director. For applicants located more than 60 miles away, NAFA requires an established relationship with a local rescue or shelter. The adoption process involves several steps: First, you will visit our pet adoption event to meet the puppy. Next, you will need to complete a potential home questionnaire and participate in an interview with the director. It is important to note that not every applicant is a suitable match for the animals we have available. If, following these steps, both you and the director agree that your home is a good fit for the dog, a bandanna will be placed on the dog, and you will finalize the adoption with our adoption counselor. The puppies have received their initial vaccinations, deworming, and are on heartworm preventative. Adult dogs are up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, and also on heartworm preventative. All pets adopted from NAFA are microchipped and registered under your name and address. We provide a bag of the food the puppy has been eating, along with stress vitamins to assist with the transition from the foster home to your home. Additionally, we supply a reward tag for the dog, which can help in the event that the pet gets lost, encouraging anyone who finds the dog to contact us for the reward. All pets are covered by 30 days of shelter care insurance. The adoption contract you will sign includes 19 important items, with the following four being particularly significant: You agree to return the following Saturday after adoption to provide proof that you have taken the dog to the vet for the next set of vaccinations. This can be submitted via fax if you live more than 1.5 hours away from Jonesboro. You are required to have the puppy spayed or neutered before it reaches 5 months of age and to provide proof of this. Most adult dogs are already altered unless our veterinarian recommends waiting 30 to 60 days. The adoption will not be considered complete until proof of spay or neuter is received. You must take the pet to your veterinarian for the next set of vaccinations and to purchase heartworm preventative by the Tuesday following your adoption. Finally, you are expected to return on the fifth or sixth Saturday after adoption for a final check-in and a mini training session. This is mandatory unless you live more than 2 hours away, in which case it can be conducted via email or telephone. If your circumstances change and you are unable to keep the dog, you must return the dog to NAFA.

Northeast Arkansans for Animals in Jonesboro, AR
Over the past 11 years, NAFA has played a crucial role in rescuing thousands of dogs and cats from various sources, including puppy mills, catteries, Class B dealers, backyard breeders, pet stores, and individual owners. NAFA operates without a physical shelter; instead, all animals are housed in foster homes, which fosters their mental and physical well-being. The organization relies on dedicated volunteers who generously offer their time, supplies, and affection without receiving any financial compensation. All donations are allocated directly to the care of the animals. NAFA's programs include Animal Safe Harbor (ASH) to support pets in domestic violence situations, Rescuing Animals in Distress (RAID) for abuse investigations, and Pet Assistance to Seniors (PATS) in collaboration with the Area Agency on Aging. Additional initiatives are NAFA ARK, which aims to reduce euthanasia rates through low-cost spay/neuter services, monthly low-cost vaccination clinics, Paw Patrol for youth education, Animals in Disaster (AID), Animeals, a pet food bank, juvenile detention visitation programs, Trap-Neuter-Relocate efforts, monthly animal events, court advocacy for animals, public and professional seminars on animal-related issues, and free behavior assessment and training recommendations.
